Garden III

Generative music, as found in Garden and Garden II, is presented in Garden III to a non-stationary audience using a location-based media app.

The setting of Garden III is The Gardens at Texas A&M University. In The Gardens there are eight regions delineated by concentric circles (the light blue circles on the map above). The listener walks into the area circumscribed by the outer circle and the first sound file fades in (the red numbers on the map). When the listener enters the next circle in, the second sound file fades in, while the first continues. Thus, the texture grows more and more dense until the center section of the concentric circles is reached.

As the listener moves away from the center area of the concentric circles and exits regions, the texture grows less dense as sound files successively fade out one by one.

Above is a simulation of what an audience member might hear using the locative-media app in The Gardens as they cross through the sectors indicated on the map (for example, traveling on the path from the south-west “1” to the north-east “1”).
