Bird Song

The original audio for Bird Song came from a recording of a Northern Mockingbird singing at the top of a tree in Bryan, Texas in the early morning on June 25, 2021. The audio was edited into separate sound samples according to song type. The samples were then varied by attack time, duration, pitch, distance from listener, and horizontal angle from the listener.

About the Northern Mockingbird (from Farnsworth et al. 2020):

  • “Adults possess extensive vocal repertoires of acoustically distinct sounds called song types.”
  • “Songs are acquired through imitating the calls and songs of other birds, the vocalizations of non-avian species, mechanical sounds, and the sounds of other mockingbirds.”
  • “Mockingbirds typically repeat one song type several times before switching to another. Songs are presented in ‘bouts,’ with each bout consisting of repetitions of only one song type.”
